Significant Success in Reducing Infection Rate in Nagpur Rural
Filariasis is prevalent across 18 districts in Maharashtra, including Nagpur, Chandrapur, Bhandara, Wardha, Gadchiroli, Amravati, Akola, Latur, Dharashiv, Solapur, Jalgaon, Sindhudurg, Nanded, Thane, Palghar, Nandurbar, and Yavatmal. According to the latest report (February 2026), about 75% of the total cases in Maharashtra are concentrated in the Nagpur division. The five most affected districts are Bhandara, Chandrapur, Nagpur, Gadchiroli, and Gondia.
The success rate of the Triple Drug Policy (IDA) is noteworthy. In rural Nagpur, the microfilaria (MF) rate has been reduced from 4.91% in 2014 to less than 1% by 2024 due to this campaign.
Experts state that IDA therapy is more effective in reducing microfilaria (parasites), thereby helping to curb the spread of the disease more quickly. The state government has appealed to citizens to avoid believing in rumors and to take the medicines under the supervision of health workers. Experts have also emphasized that eliminating filariasis is not possible without active public participation.
