Mumbai, July 28: Grandmaster Divya Deshmukh has etched her name on the Women's World Chess Championship trophy, raising India’s pride to new heights. Notably, as the first woman Grandmaster from Maharashtra to become a world champion, she has inscribed Maharashtra’s name in golden letters on the international chessboard. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis extended heartfelt congratulations on behalf of the entire state of Maharashtra to Divya Deshmukh for this remarkable achievement. He also congratulated runner-up Grandmaster Koneru Humpy.

Chief Minister Fadnavis noted that the moves of both these Indian chess players captivated the entire chess world, making this moment a rare and proud occasion for Indian chess.

In his congratulatory message, CM Fadnavis stated, “In just her second attempt, Divya has set a national record at the Women’s World Chess Championship. She is the first teenage chess player to qualify for the Women Candidates Tournament and is now India’s fourth woman Grandmaster. She has represented India internationally 40 times and has won 35 medals, including 23 gold, 7 silver, and 5 bronze. The gripping contest between two Indian chess players for the world title was a historic spectacle, and the rise of Indian women in a sport like chess is highly significant.”
