Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s Teaching Career Also Inspirational — Chief Justice Bhushan Gavai
Mumbai, 5th : Chief Justice Bhushan Gavai emphasized that Dr. B.R. Ambedkar was a multi-talented personality—legal expert, economist, sociologist—and his contributions to education were invaluable. He stated that Dr. Ambedkar’s teaching career, spanning 90 years, is both significant and inspirational.
To commemorate this milestone, the Government Law College organized an inauguration of a memorial plaque celebrating 90 years since Dr. Ambedkar served as professor and principal. A felicitation ceremony for Chief Justice Gavai was also held.
Distinguished attendees included Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court Alok Aradhe, Justice Manish Pitale, Advocate General Birendra Saraf, and Principal Dr. Asmita Vaidya. A photo exhibition based on Dr. Ambedkar’s life and work was unveiled by dignitaries. The college honored Chief Justice Gavai with a citation, also recognizing contributions from various institutions and guests.
Chief Justice Gavai remarked, “Dr. Ambedkar was a scholar of great depth and versatility. Besides his multi-domain contributions, his teaching career remains deeply inspirational. While teaching at Government Law College, he also began championing justice for marginalized communities. His contributions were pivotal in the 1935 Government of India Act.”
He further noted that the college, enriched by Dr. Ambedkar’s legacy, has produced many eminent jurists. Its various committees’ exemplary work was also praised.
Gavai added, “It is a matter of pride that Dr. Ambedkar is honored at the institution where he taught, and I, as an alumnus, am equally proud.”
Principal Asmita Vaidya said the college has a luminous educational heritage and has produced renowned legal experts. Dr. Ambedkar began his teaching career here in 1935, instructing complex subjects like jurisprudence. To honor his legacy on the 90th anniversary of his teaching, the event was organized. The college also conducts various legal service programs, she noted.
Also present were former Supreme Court Justice Hemant Gokhale, Justice Revati Dhere, Justice Neela Gokhale, Vice-Chancellors Dr. Dilip Uke, Dr. Hemlata Bagla, Dr. Apurva Palekar, Dr. Gosavi, Principal Secretary Suvarna Kevle, Senior Counsel Rafik Dada, Bar Council Chairman Vitthal Kondhe-Deshmukh, actress Princess Asharani Gaikwad, and other dignitaries.
