E-buses must be supplied as per new schedule
Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik's directives
Mumbai, May 30 : The government is consistently working to ensure quality facilities for passengers. Accordingly, a contract has been signed with Eve Trans Pvt. Ltd. for leasing 5,150 electric buses. To provide timely services to commuters, Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has instructed that the supply of e-buses to the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) must proceed as per the revised schedule.
Minister Sarnaik was speaking at a review meeting held at Mantralaya regarding the supply of electric buses. Present at the meeting were Additional Chief Secretary Sanjay Sethi, MSRTC Managing Director Dr. Madhav Kusekar, and company representative K.V. Pradeep, among others.
The minister emphasized that the company should adhere to the supply schedule committed earlier. Considering the operational losses from the buses provided so far, a proposal should be sent to the state government to seek Viability Gap Funding (VGF). So far, the company has supplied 220 buses, and the remaining supply should be planned in line with the revised agreement.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Minister Sarnaik said that as per the agreement, the company is to supply 5,150 electric buses on a lease basis. Of these, 220 buses have been delivered, which include 12-meter and 9-meter variants. The MSRTC has created separate departmental accounts to manage payments to the company from the revenue generated by the electric buses. So far, ₹60 crore has been paid to the company, and the remaining ₹40 crore is planned to be paid shortly.
The MSRTC is currently incurring a loss of ₹12 per kilometer for operating 12-meter buses and ₹16 per kilometer for 9-meter buses. Over the coming years, the corporation is projected to bear a cumulative loss of ₹3,191 crore due to these operations.
To address this issue, Minister Sarnaik informed that a meeting will soon be held with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar to make a final decision on the matter.
