opening the integrated double-decker flyover in front of Savitribai Phule

Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Ajit Pawar said that opening the integrated double-decker flyover in front of Savitribai Phule Pune University for traffic is a significant moment for Pune city. Traffic congestion near the university main gate and along Ganeshkhind Road had been a major issue for residents for many years. This modern double-decker flyover has been constructed using advanced technology as a long-term solution to the problem.

Work is simultaneously underway on three levels

Work is simultaneously underway on three levels—on the ground, in the air, and underground—to improve transportation in Pune. Two ring road projects are being implemented for Pune and its surrounding areas. The metro network is expanding rapidly, and public transport services such as Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) are being strengthened to make commuting more efficient, he said.

Highlighting Pune’s rapid growth

Highlighting Pune’s rapid growth, Mr. Fadnavis said that the city is among the fastest-growing in the country. After major expansion in the Information Technology (IT) sector, Pune is now emerging as a key hub for Global Capability Centres (GCCs). In the past year, the largest GCC office space in the country has been developed in Pune, further enhancing the city’s economic and industrial significance. To support this growth, strong infrastructure development is essential, he said.

He noted that some major cities have experienced slowed growth due to inadequate infrastructure. Therefore, decongesting Pune is a priority for the government. Since the city has limited road space, the administration is modernising the transport system through flyovers, grade separators, underpasses, and expansion of public transport.

During the early stages of the project, some media outlets and citizens

During the early stages of the project, some media outlets and citizens had criticised the decision. However, the project was undertaken keeping the city’s long-term interests in mind. Referring to this, Ajit Dada had once remarked in a speech, “We may not be engineers, but it is our responsibility to ensure that projects are completed quickly according to the plans prepared by engineers.” With his persistent efforts, the project has now been completed and its positive impact is visible to the citizens of Pune, the Chief Minister added.

several challenges and differences of opinion while deciding to demolish

The Chief Minister said that there were several challenges and differences of opinion while deciding to demolish the old bridge at University Chowk and construct a new double-decker flyover. However, by building consensus and receiving cooperation from leaders across parties, the project was successfully completed. He noted that the initiative taken by the late Ajit Dada played a crucial role in this process.
