Mechanisms Ready to Handle Emergency Caused by Heavy Rains
- Disaster Management Minister Girish Mahajan
Mumbai, May 26: Disaster Management Minister Girish Mahajan today reviewed the emergency situation arising due to heavy pre-monsoon rains across the state. He paid a prompt visit to the State Emergency Operations Center and obtained updates from the concerned officials. Mahajan assured that all disaster response mechanisms are prepared and operational round-the-clock (24x7) to effectively tackle the situation caused by the intense rainfall.
Director of Disaster Management, Satishkumar Khadke, briefed the minister during the review. Officials from the Disaster Management Department were also present.
Minister Mahajan stated that this is the first time the state is witnessing such heavy pre-monsoon rainfall in May. In light of the challenges created by the downpour, directives have been issued to all Divisional Commissioners, District Collectors, and Municipal Commissioners to take necessary precautions and implement appropriate measures.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a rain alert for the next three days in the state. Due to the pre-monsoon showers, there has been a sudden rise in water levels in rivers and streams, increasing the possibility of road closures. Citizens are advised not to venture out unnecessarily and to exercise caution while visiting waterfalls or other such sites for monsoon tourism.
To assist citizens during emergencies, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have been deployed. NDRF teams were sent to Baramati and Phaltan yesterday to evacuate people to safer locations, Minister Mahajan added.
