First Flight to Take Off from Navi Mumbai International Airport in September
World’s Fastest Baggage Claim System to be Operational

Raigad, July 12: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today directed the concerned authorities to ensure that the Navi Mumbai International Airport features the world's fastest baggage claim system. He emphasized that this should be a defining feature of the airport. Presently, 94% of the airport’s construction is complete, and the remaining 6% will be completed by September 2025. The first passenger flight is expected to take off in September itself, he assured.
The CM was speaking while reviewing the progress of the airport work on-site.
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Forest Minister Ganesh Naik, former MP Ramsheth Thakur, MLAs Prashant Thakur, Mahesh Baldi, Manda Mhatre, CIDCO Vice Chairman and MD Vijay Singhal, Divisional Commissioner Vijay Suryavanshi, District Collector Kisan Jawale, CEO Neha Bhosale, CIDCO Jt. MD Shantanu Goyal, Raja Dayanidhi, Ganesh Deshmukh, Chief Vigilance Officer Suresh Mengade, Geeta Pillai, Navi Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Kailas Shinde, Navi Mumbai Police Commissioner Milind Bharambe, Joint Commissioner Sanjay Singh Yenpure, Deputy Commissioner Rashmi Nandedkar, and other dignitaries were present.
The CM and DCM along with other dignitaries conducted an on-site inspection of the ongoing work at the Navi Mumbai International Airport. They especially focused on reviewing the passenger facilities being developed at the site.
In its Phase 1 and 2, the Navi Mumbai International Airport is designed to handle 20 million passengers and 0.8 million metric tonnes of cargo annually. The airport is on track for commissioning in September 2025. CM Fadnavis mentioned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had performed the groundbreaking ceremony of the project, and it will also be inaugurated by him, which is a matter of pride.
After the site inspection, CM Fadnavis briefed the media on the current status of the project. On June 10, 2022, CIDCO granted NMIAL 100% access and Right of Way over 1,160 hectares of land. All resettlement activities have been completed, with CIDCO spending approximately ₹2,000 crore on land acquisition and rehabilitation.
Navi Mumbai International Airport Pvt. Ltd. (NMIAL) achieved financial closure for the project on March 29, 2022. Of the total project cost of ₹19,647 crore for Phases 1 and 2, ₹12,770 crore has been sanctioned by SBI (₹15,981 crore by NMIAL and ₹3,665 crore by CIDCO).
CIDCO has also completed all pre-development works including 5.5-meter land filling across 1,160 hectares, diversion of the Ulwe River, and shifting of high-tension power lines.
On October 11, 2024, the Indian Air Force’s transport aircraft C-295 conducted the inaugural landing on the runway, followed by two low passes by SU-30s. On December 29, 2024, IndiGo Airlines' Airbus A320 successfully performed the airport’s first commercial landing.
As of June 30, 2025, the airport project has achieved 96.5% physical progress. Around 13,000 workers are currently deployed at the site. To complete the remaining work on time, more manpower will be deployed, and all agencies have been instructed to finish the remaining work before September under any circumstance.
