Borivali to Thane Twin Tunnel Project to be Completed
in Three Years: CM Devendra Fadnavis
Mumbai, June 26: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed that henceforth, no infrastructure project in the state should be delayed, and every such project must be completed within three years. He was speaking during a review meeting of the Borivali-Thane Twin Tunnel Project held at the Cabinet Hall in Vidhan Bhavan today. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde was also present at the meeting.
CM Fadnavis emphasized that permanent rehabilitation of affected persons under the Borivali-Thane tunnel project must be ensured. He instructed that the entire project should be completed by December 2028.
He stated that the twin tunnel will be 11.84 kilometers long, and proper air circulation must be maintained within it. For this, immediate steps should be taken to make additional land available from the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. He also directed that necessary second-phase forest department permissions and night-time work permissions must be obtained.
To expedite the work on the Borivali side and to complete the rehabilitation of affected people there, a special drive should be conducted and completed within a month, said the CM.
He further instructed that agencies should work in coordination to rehabilitate project-affected people either by providing rent or through other housing projects. A dedicated officer should be appointed to ensure this work is completed within a month.
Land acquisition from Adani and Tata Power projects on the Borivali side should be carried out, and final road planning permissions must be given to Adani Power Company for laying underground electric lines.
During the meeting, MMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee gave a detailed presentation. Other attendees included Chief Secretary Sujata Saunik, Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani, Additional Metropolitan Commissioner Ashwin Mudgal, Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Ramrao, SGNP Director Anita Patil, MHADA CEO Sanjay Jaiswal, Thane District Collector Ashok Shingare, and Thane Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao.

The project, once completed, is expected to greatly improve connectivity between Mumbai and Thane while contributing to environmental sustainability and reduced traffic congestion.
