New Authority to Remove Municipal Council Presidents

New Authority to Remove Municipal Council Presidents

The Cabinet has approved amendments to the Maharashtra Municipal Council Act, 1965, allowing members of municipal councils, municipalities, and industrial cities to have the authority to remove their respective presidents. Previously, a proposal to remove the president needed signatures from 50% of the elected members, and then it was sent for further action by the government. Now, the power will be transferred to the members to remove the president.

A proposal signed by two-thirds of the members will be sent to the district collector, who will convene a special meeting to make a decision by vote. This amendment to the law has been approved, and an ordinance will be issued for the same
