Udaan’ Strengthens Mental Health Services in Nagpur District:

– Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis

Mumbai, May 25: The district-level mental health program ‘Udaan’, launched by the Government of Maharashtra in collaboration with Tata Trusts, has achieved remarkable success in Nagpur district. This initiative has significantly improved access to mental health services in rural areas, according to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

The national mental health policy aims to raise awareness about mental health, ensure easy access to services in both rural and urban areas, increase the number of psychiatrists and counselors, provide outpatient care, and offer specialized mental health services. The Udaan program aligns with these goals and is Maharashtra’s first initiative of its kind. Through this program, citizens receive mental health services at their nearest health centers.

Programme is launched in 2018 under the leadership of CM Fadnavis, the primary goal of the Udaan initiative is to provide high-quality mental health services to citizens in rural areas of Nagpur district through sub-district hospitals and primary health centers. The program began as a partnership between the Department of Public Health and Family Welfare, Government of Maharashtra, and Tata Trusts. Since 2023, its responsibility has been entrusted to the Gramin Adivasi Vikas Seva Sanstha, with support from Indira Foundation.

As part of this initiative, the program includes 2 sub-district hospitals, 10 rural hospitals, 56 primary health centers, 778 Gram Panchayats, and 1,724 ASHA workers across 13 talukas in the district. Mental health surveys have been conducted door-to-door using tablets with the help of ASHA workers, covering a total number of 6,22,431 citizens so far.

Through this project, 9,110 outpatient mental health sessions have been organized, providing treatment to 9,472 patients and delivering a total of 92,423 counseling and treatment services. Among these patients, 66% have fully recovered, and 24% are currently undergoing treatment.

Of the 69 service centers in Nagpur district, 13 are served by the District Mental Health Program (DMHP) team, while the remaining 56 are managed by trained medical officers. Monthly awareness programs are conducted in 465 villages with the help of Gram Panchayats, bhajan mandals, farmer groups, and women’s self-help groups. Additionally, the Udaan team has conducted in-home counseling sessions for 11,936 patients. A total of 1,724 ASHA workers have received specialized training on mental health and public awareness.

Previously, rural citizens had to travel to Nagpur city for mental health services. Now, these services are available at nearby government health centers.

The district administration and the District Mental Health Program team play a vital role in ensuring good mental health for citizens through the Udaan initiative. Furthermore, the Public Health Department, District Council, Rural Hospitals (RH), Sub-District Hospitals (SDH), and Primary Health Centers (PHC) have all contributed significantly.

Chief Minister Fadnavis stated, “Thanks to the Udaan initiative, Nagpur district has made great strides in the field of mental health, and this program is set to become a model for other districts across the country.”Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis
