Nagpur, July 27: The government is actively working to ensure that all parts of Nagpur, amid its rapid expansion, are well connected through an efficient public transportation system. Although the current road infrastructure in Nagpur is reasonably good, it is proving insufficient due to the rapid increase in the number of vehicles. To address this, a comprehensive mobility plan has been developed that includes the creation of new roads connecting all areas with safe footpaths for pedestrians, expansion of congested junctions, establishment of bus stops, route planning for public transport buses, and ensuring connectivity between metro stations and buses.

The draft plan, valued at approximately ₹25,567 crore, will be further strengthened by incorporating public opinion to make it more citizen-centric. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has instructed officials to seek public feedback in this regard.

A review meeting on the Comprehensive Mobility Plan for Nagpur was held today at the Metro Bhavan under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Also present were Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, Guardian Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, Minister of State for Finance and Planning Adv. Ashish Jaiswal, MP Shyamkumar Barve, MLAs Krishna Khopde, Praveen Datke, Sameer Meghe, Charansingh Thakur, Sanjay Meshram, Divisional Commissioner Vijayalakshmi Bidari, Nagpur Police Commissioner Dr. Ravindra Kumar Singhal, MahaMetro MD Shravan Hardikar, NIT Chairman Sanjay Meena, Collector Dr. Vipin Itankar, ZP CEO Vinayak Mahamuni, MahaMetro Directors Anil Kumar Kokate and Rajeev Tyagi, and other senior officials from district administration and MahaMetro.

After the COVID period, the city's expansion has accelerated. The number of vehicles is growing rapidly, with hundreds of registrations happening daily. Roads are inadequate compared to the increasing number of vehicles. New urban areas are emerging in every direction, and a large workforce is commuting to MIHAN. Naturally, this is putting pressure on public transportation. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari emphasized that authorities must expedite work according to the new mobility plan.

 

In addition to Nagpur’s development, there are two major energy generation projects and several mines located in Koradi, Kamptee, Kanhan, and Khaparkheda. Due to urbanization in these areas, road infrastructure has become inadequate. Guardian and Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule instructed that the new mobility plan should include widening of roads and development of new roads connecting metro stations with residential areas, as well as industrial hubs in these zones.

Keeping future needs in mind, the meeting discussed the development of Mor Bhavan and Ganeshpeth bus stations, along with creating public bus hubs at Parsodi, Khapri, Wadi, Kapasi, and Kamptee. Focus will also be on providing bus connectivity in areas not served by the metro.

Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MahaMetro) has begun the process of preparing a new Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) for Nagpur city and the Nagpur Metropolitan Region. This is being implemented according to guidelines laid down by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Government of India. The CMP is a long-term strategic document that guides urban and freight transport systems, supporting investments for an integrated, inclusive, and sustainable transport network.

The first CMP for Nagpur was prepared in 2013 by the Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT). In July 2018, MahaMetro conducted a new survey and consultation and updated the plan. Given the city's increasing growth, new research and consultations were undertaken under the chairmanship of the Divisional Commissioner of Nagpur to identify future needs and improve public facilities. Based on the suggestions received, a new Comprehensive Mobility Plan was prepared. This plan was discussed extensively today with public representatives.
