Commitment to Democratic Values is Essential

Commitment to Democratic Values is Essential

– Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar

Mumbai, March 6: A perpetual confrontational approach contradicts the fundamental principles of democracy. This eternal principle should serve as a guiding doctrine for governance, providing direction to both current and future leaders. If India remains committed to democratic values, it will achieve the highest levels of prestige and success, said Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar.

He was speaking at the inauguration of the Murli Deora Memorial Dialogues, an event organized in memory of former Union Minister Murli Deora. The event was attended by Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan, Vice President’s wife Dr. Sudesh Dhankhar, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Members of Parliament Milind Deora and Ashok Chavan, Amruta Fadnavis, Hema Deora, Raghavendra Singh from Kotak Bank, and other distinguished dignitaries.

The Murli Deora Memorial Dialogues aim to encourage discussions on crucial topics such as public policy, social justice, and economic development, with this year's central theme being "Leadership and Good Governance." Speaking on leadership and governance, Vice President Dhankhar emphasized that citizens must hold their elected representatives accountable, as awareness is key to a functioning democracy. He highlighted that governance is the responsibility of the executive branch, which is answerable to both the people and the legislature. Leadership, he stressed, is not merely defined by a position but by vision and purpose. Citing the Upanishads, he stated that true happiness comes from sacrifice and that leaders must embrace this philosophy. He also reiterated the principle of "Satyameva Jayate" (Truth Alone Triumphs) from the Mundaka Upanishad, emphasizing that Vedic wisdom encourages collective action for the greater good.

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde paid tribute to Murli Deora, describing him as a leader who maintained dialogue with all and worked his way up from a municipal corporator to a Union Minister through positive and dedicated efforts. He lauded the Memorial Dialogues for focusing on leadership and governance, stressing that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s leadership serves as an inspiration for governance today. He further stated that the government is dedicated to serving the common people and credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for enhancing India's global reputation through good governance.

The event’s introductory remarks were delivered by MP Milind Deora, setting the stage for insightful discussions on leadership and democratic governance
